Travel
Delaware is conveniently located in the Tri-State area and is less than a twenty-minute drive to Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Maryland. There are three major airports (and one regional airport) within approximately one hour of Wilmington, and it is served by both Amtrak and the SouthEastern Pennsylvania Transit Authority (“SEPTA”). In other words, getting here is easy. The various options are listed below:
By Plane
Wilmington is within approximately an hour of three major airports and one regional airport.
This year, commercial airline service restarted at the New Castle County airport (ILG), which is approximately fifteen minutes from the riverfront and downtown Wilmington. ILG is served by Avelo, a low-cost airline carrier. If you choose to fly through ILG, there will be a shorter wait time and line at the airport, although Avelo does have a limited schedule. You can access Avelo’s website by clicking HERE.
The closest international airport to Wilmington is Philadelphia International Airport (PHL), located approximately twenty miles from downtown Wilmington and the Riverfront. While you can take public transit from PHL to Wilmington, it requires you to use SEPTA and to travel into the city before traveling to Wilmington (approximately 2 hours total), so we recommend taking a taxi or Uber down.
NOTE: We will be providing shuttles on Sunday to the airport on a first come / first served basis. Shuttles will run approximately every 30-45 minutes. Click here to signup for a shuttle. Please make sure that you include the total number of people you are registering.
In addition, Wilmington is within an hour drive (or 40 minute train ride) of Baltimore / Washington International airport (BWI) and within an hour and 45 minute drive (or approximately a one hour train ride) of Newark Liberty International airport (EWR). If you are renting a car or would like to take Amtrak (which stops at both airports), these airports provide additional travel options.
By Train
The Joseph R. Biden Wilmington Train Station (WIL) is in South Wilmington at the start of the Wilmington Riverfront. The station is approximately one (1) mile from the host hotel (the Westin) and the other two hotels on the Riverfront.
WIL is served by both Amtrak and SEPTA. Both Amtrak’s Northeast Regional and Acela trains make regular stops, and the station is also served by many of the long-haul trains that run the eastern seaboard (including the Silver Meteor and the Silver Crescent). Amtrak’s website can be access by clicking HERE.
WIL is also served by SEPTA, which links with NJ transit in Trenton. This provides an alternative to Amtrak for teams within a train ride or drive of Trenton.
By Automobile
Downtown Wilmington and the Riverfront are conveniently accessible from I-95 and, for those of you staying on the Riverfront, parking is free!
While You Are Here
We will be running shuttles between the Wilmington Riverfront (where the host hotels and convention center are located), our overflow hotels (where we encourage judges to stay), the courthouse (where the competition will take place), and certain venues downtown for our events. Outside of these shuttles, we note that the riverfront is very walkable (as is downtown), although for safety and convenience, we recommend that individuals not walk between the Wilmington Riverfront and downtown (as there is a major eight-lane road to cross).
If you have some down-time during the Championship, stop by the Greater Wilmington Convention and Visitor’s Bureau, located at 920 Justison Street (just across from the Homewood Suites) or check out their guide here.
Where to Stay
We are encouraging all teams and coaches to stay on the Wilmington Riverfront, where many of the events for the competition will take place. We have contracted with the Westin (our host hotel), the Homewood Suites, and the Hyatt Place. The Westin is connected to the Chase Center and both the Homewood Suites and Hyatt Place are located approximately one block away.
For those who would prefer to stay away from the Riverfront (or are judges), we have also arranged space at the Hotel DuPont, the Residence Inn and Suites, and the Staybridge Suites, all of which are clustered on the north end of downtown and convenient to Wilmington’s nightlife and restaurants.
NOTE: In the list below, the * denotes rooms with sofa beds (so, for example, a double queen suite with an asterisk has two queen beds as well as a sofa bed).
